Capacitors-> (56)Germanium diodes are different that their silicon cousins in that they have a lower forward voltage drop (typically 0.3V) which makes them useful for audio and radio detection circuits plus other low voltage uses. While the benefits of lower power consumption and efficiency is desirable it does have the drawback of a much higher leakage current at a given reverse voltage than silicon.
