Coaxial RF connectors were designed to work at radio frequencies or higher. The coaxial design had a signal wire with an outer sheath of shielding wire or braid. The shielding was designed to protect the original signal from outside EMI/RFI interference. As with nearly all types of connectors the transmission line impedance is an important specification to consider before purchase.
